Cross-connections between potable water lines and non-potable sources (irrigation systems, fire suppression, boilers, etc.) can allow pollutants or chemicals to flow backward into the water supply if pressure drops. Most jurisdictions require annual backflow testing — once per year. Some high-risk facilities (hospitals, chemical plants, food processing) may require more frequent testing. A DCVA (Double Check Valve Assembly) is a backflow prevention device with two independently operating check valves. It provides reliable protection for low-to-moderate hazard applications such as fire sprinkler systems and some commercial water connections. DCVAs are less complex than RPZ valves and don't have a relief valve, so they cannot be used in high-hazard situations.

A PVB (Pressure Vacuum Breaker) is a backflow prevention device that uses a spring-loaded check valve and an air inlet valve to prevent backsiphonage. PVBs are commonly used in irrigation and lawn sprinkler systems. They must be installed at least 12 inches above the highest downstream point and can only protect against backsiphonage — not backpressure.

Backflow testing typically costs between $50 and $200 per device, depending on your location, the type of device (RPZ valves tend to cost more to test than PVBs), and whether any repairs are needed. Some providers offer discounts for testing multiple devices at the same property. The cost of not testing — potential fines, water shutoff, or contamination liability — far outweighs the testing fee.

If you skip required backflow testing, your local water authority may issue fines, send violation notices, or even shut off your water service until the device is tested and certified. In some jurisdictions, the property owner can also be held liable for any contamination that results from a failed or untested backflow device.
